Want to hear a little known fact about me? I love bats! From the time I was a student teacher, I loved to do a bat science unit for Halloween and read Stellaluna to the class. Now I'm sharing this classic bat story with my own kids. We made a bat themed trail mix to to with the book! It's the perfect Halloween snack.

Stellaluna by Janell Cannon shows just how adorable bats can be so it's the perfect way to introduce these flying mammals to kids!
For a Stellaluna themed snack we used the bat shaped pretzels from Utz's Halloween pretzels, dried cranberries and plantain chips (since Stellaluna was a fruit bat), plus pumpkin seeds, and almonds.
The possibilities when creating a trail mix with kids are endless but we prefer a mix of sweet dried fruit and salty snacks and we always include protein!

I invited our daughter to scoop and stir the trail mix herself for fine motor practice. When hosting a Book Club Play Date or classroom party, you can have each child add the ingredients they like best to their own bowl or bag of snack mix.
