I'm excited to be joining with other kid bloggers in bringing you Fine Motor Fridays, a collection of weekly fine motor based ideas! All toddlers and preschoolers will benefit while being intrigued and engaged in the inspiring activities.

This week we used D's toddler busy box to play a sight word game, but this is easily adaptable for any recognition skill your child is working on mastering.  I love finding ways to make a toy engaging to both my kids simultaneously!  While E has fun opening these boxes for D to close occasionally, this activity made the toy much more interesting for her!

I wrote sight words on small post it notes to adhere them to the lids of the busy box.  I used some words that I knew E can read while mixing in some that she is confusing often.

First she read the words from left to right using her "reading finger" to encourage her to cross her midline.

Next, I would call out a sight word as she raced to open the corresponding box.  This is where those fine motor skills came in!  She had to pinch, twist, pull, and push those buttons!

To switch it up, we practiced letter recognition to work out E's b, d, p, q confusion.  Another variation would be numbers for recognition or addition or subtraction skills!

E wanted to be the teacher for awhile.  She is still learning as she "teaches" me so I was all for this swap!

I even worked with her assistant teacher, Ms. Cowie.

If you try this activity, I'd love to hear how it goes in the comments!  Would your child be motivated by the fast paced racing aspect of the game or does he like to take a turn being the teacher?
