Frozen Inspired Winter Writing Salt Tray

We are a bit Frozen obsessed! Hearing E sing the soundtrack would melt anyone's heart! After the movie inspired us to build snowflakes on our light table, we next decided to make a Frozen inspired winter writing salt tray for fine motor practice.

To create the tray, I wrapped a (sanitized) styrofoam packing tray in tin foil.  I added coarse leftover aquarium salt because we had it on hand but rock salt would work well.  We mixed in blue glitter for added icy shimmer!

E drew and wrote in the salt with her fingertip.  (You can catch a peek of her polar bear manicure in the lower left corner of the photo above!)

She explored the sensory experience of writing in the salt independently.  Next she asked me to tell her what letters, numbers, sight words, and shapes to write.  I called them out as I made us lunch and she worked.

She didn't like how the glitter stuck to her finger, so we switched to a sturdy reusable and colorful straw for a writing tool.  This was valuable experience as we continue to work on correcting her pencil grasp.
