Aren't these colors beautiful on the light table? They make music as well making it a multiple sensory experience that preschoolers will love!
I started by putting different amounts of water in glasses. We dyed the water rainbow colors. Our preschooler was very interested in getting the colors just right. She also put the glasses in order on the light table.
I demonstrated how to gently hit one glass with a (dull kid friendly) dinner knife. She hit the other glasses.
I was surprised that she correctly identified the difference between high and low notes as we discussed the musical scale.

I played Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and Mary Had a Little Lamb but my audience was unimpressed.
She was more interested in the why behind the changes in pitch and my little smartie dug out her measuring tape to investigate the difference between the glasses! Oh, her analytical thinking at four years old!
In keeping with the experimental part of our investigation, we moved on to colored water in glass bottles. Our preschooler blew across the mouth of the bottle.
We poured a bit of water out and tried again. Over and over we repeated this process. She concluded that less water makes the notes lower.
What fun we had trying to make music with water on the light table. It was a colorful, musical afternoon!

DeleteSuch a great idea! I love that she used the measuring tape to measure the heights of the water. There are so many learning opportunities here and it's so fun!!
