Make a Wild Thing with Shapes

We are reading and crafting with Where the Wild Things Are by creating our very own shape monsters!

Read Where the Wild Things Are then create a shape monster craft with kids

Our kids are fascinated by the book Where the Wild Things Are! From the setting to the plot to the characters they are captivated from the first to the last word. It's no wonder that it's won the Caldecott Medal!

I invited our kids to make their own Wild Things! I set out construction paper shapes cut in the colors used in the book. Also available was a glue stick and crayons

First the kids and I discussed the shapes. "What colors do you see? What shape is this? Which one is larger? What might you use to create your Wild Thing?"

Learning to create a face with recognizable features is the first step in drawing a picture which is the first step in learning to write for children! While we can get a bit more creative with Wild Things, we were still naming typical parts of the face and counting them. "You have two eyes. How many eyes will your Wild Thing have?"

The kids carefully selected and arranged their pieces. When they had the placement just the way they wanted it they glued them in place. Finally, they added details with crayon if they chose to do so.
