Scarecrow Glyph

Glyphs are one of my favorite ways to extend the learning involved with creating a cute fall craft with kids. This scarecrow glyph represents many aspects of the child who created it. You can use the glyph key to learn the student's age, favorite color, opinion about fall, and much more!

All of the parts of this adorable scarecrow glyph are parts of a pattern we've made for you! This would be perfect for a fall theme for kids.

The hat and the shirt of the scarecrow are orange if the child creating the craft is a girl and red if the crafter is a boy.

You can either print the pattern on card stock to create a pattern for a whole classroom to children to trace over and over again at a center or you can print the pattern directly on to colored paper. We trimmed down construction paper to put right into our printer but if you have access to a copy machine you can also copy the pattern on to colored paper.

Kids cut out the parts for this craft which is great for practicing scissor skills. Children make the scarecrow's overalls in their favorite color. The sleeves of the shirt are glued behind the overalls. The head and hat are added on next.

The number of pieces of "straw" making up the hands and feet represent the child's age. Remind kids that they will need to draw and cut one less line than their age to create the correct amount for this step! For example, our daughter is five so she drew and cut four lines to make the five pieces of straw.

If you hang a whole classroom of these scarecrows as part of a display be sure to include this information for your viewers! If you are crafting with one or a few children, you can print this to guide them as they create their scarecrow.

Oh, I just love how this scarecrow glyph turned out! You can see that our daughter is a girl who loves the color purple. She is five years old. She has one sister and one brother. She likes the season fall!
